Drink, swap, return, repeat!

Green Caffeen has Launched In Cairns with big things to come...

Cairns, Australia, 27th July, 2020 – Swap and go coffee cup scheme, Green Caffeen, has launched thanks to Blackbird Espresso Speciality Coffee last week tackling the war on single use waste head on with the intent to make it easier for locals to enjoy a takeaway coffee, without the eco-guilt. The first round of cafes launched last week with a huge amount of local interest across Cairns, Port Douglas, Ingham and surrounding suburbs.

Green Caffeen’s reusable cup scheme makes being eco-friendly a simple choice for coffee drinkers. Consumers simply need to download the Green Caffeen app and sign up, then get your reusable cup from a participating café. Enjoy your cup of coffee, then return the cup to any Green Caffeen café. And as long as you return the cup within 30 days, it’s completely free to use. The scheme is also free for participating cafes. With over 17,000 people using it in over 500 cafés Australia-wide, Green Caffeen is the largest  reusable system anywhere in the country.

“We’ve been in discussions with a number of cafes across the region, as well as local Plastic Free organisations - Plastic Free Cairns to implement our system, but when local Eco Legends Troy from Blackbird Espresso Speciality Coffee put their hand up to lead the first round roll out with us we flicked the switch and have made it happen. The Green Caffeen reusable cups make it easy to choose the eco-friendly option without sacrificing convenience,” says Damien Clarke, Co-founder, Green Caffeen.

Over a billion disposable cups are thrown away each year in Australia. Many of these end up in the sea, polluting the ecosystem and destroying marine life. Changing our takeaway coffee habits is one simple step that can have a big impact.

Damien continues, “Green Caffeen saves cafes the cost of single use packaging as well as saving the environment, so it’s a real no-brainer for them to jump on board. Green Caffeen was deliberately designed with cafes in mind to help reduce environmental footprint and increase their bottom line – that’s the secret to our success.”

With the average takeaway customer consuming 500 cups per year, that’s 7.5kg of unnecessary single use rubbish but also an average saving of $72 per customer that can be avoided with Green Caffeen’s simple swap and go system.

The Green Caffeen roll-out is part of a broader campaign across the country , encouraging residents to adopt reusable alternatives to everyday disposable items. The Cairns region now joins other government organisations including ACT Government, Inner West Council, Wollongong City, Kiama, Port Macquarie Hastings in bringing a cost saving and waste reducing initiative to local businesses and consumers with discussion well underway with Cairns Regional Council to help expand the impressive work from Blackbird Espresso Speciality Coffee and the other early adopters.

The following Cafes have are now live and ready (Whileaway Bookshop- Port Douglas, Sprout Juice & Coffee Bar - Karunda, Cafe Yorkeys- Yorkeys Knob, The Palms - Aeroglen, Blackbird Warehouse - Bungalow, Blackbird Laneway - Cairns, White Whale Coffee Roasters - Cairns, Aqua Cafe - Cairns Lagoon)
